AMN Leadership Solutions has been retained to assist in the recruitment of a new Chair of Family Medicine for The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). This institution is one of the leading research-intensive academic health centers in the nation. Along with a uniquely important role in Texas history as the state’s first medical school, it is investing in continued movement toward becoming one of the very best, nationally recognized institutions for the quality and reach of its clinical care and its research. The UTMB of today is a four-campus, $2.5 billion modern health care system with over 3,400 students and over 970 faculty in the schools of Medicine, Nursing and Health Professions, as well as a Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
The Department of Family Medicine was founded as an independent department in 1971. Family Medicine faculty provide medical care to Galveston County residents through its three clinics, located on the UTMB Galveston campus, on the western end of Galveston Island, and in Dickinson, Texas, and through its inpatient service at the new Jennie Sealy Hospital in Galveston, Texas. The department includes programs in medical student education, residency, faculty development, and research. The Chair of Family Medicine reports to the Executive Vice President, Provost and Dean of the School of Medicine.
The Chair of Family Medicine must be a compelling leader whose passion for the educational, clinical, and research missions energize the faculty and staff, focusing their efforts on a strategic vision of excellence and growth in all missions. He/she must also be a competent and prudent steward of the department, guiding it through what will almost certainly be uncharted territories of change in the healthcare and social environment. Importantly, the Chair must be viewed by all stakeholders as a strong advocate for balancing the academic, educational, and clinical missions of the department.
UTMB is deeply committed to the growth of Family Medicine; to that end the successful candidate must bring an entrepreneurial spirit as well as an energy and passion to drive expansion. The growth will include the recruitment of new clinical faculty as well as a focus on the expanding the educational and research infrastructure of the department.
The principal responsibility of the Chair is to provide leadership which results in the growth of the clinical enterprise, commitment to strong departmental research efforts, nationally recognized peer-reviewed scholarly activity, the development of unique clinical programs, a continued advancement of medical student and resident/fellow education and training, and the ongoing recruitment, development, and retention of outstanding faculty.
The new Chair will provide leadership for the Department of Family Medicine and its clinical, teaching and research mission. The successful candidate will be charged with leading the Department in excellence in patient care, education, research, and advocacy. The Chair is responsible for providing academic leadership for the faculty, learners, and staff in the Department and for providing administrative support to ensure in fulfilling UTMBs mission.
