To be responsible for the technical performance of the Section of Microbiology under the direction of the Section Manager and under advisement from the Section Chief.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Establishes and maintains technical performance levels through an ongoing evaluation of methodology and instrumentation in Microbiology, including subsections of Immunology, Virology and Molecular Diagnostics (MDX) laboratories
Develops and maintains procedure manuals for all areas of Microbiology
Develops and maintains technical expertise in specialized areas of Microbiology
Evaluates new procedures for technical feasibility, clinical application and cost-effectiveness, as directed by the Section Manager, Director of Clinical Laboratory Operations and Section Chief in long-range planning for procedural and equipment needs
Maintains competency in the field of Clinical Microbiology, Immuno/Virology and MDX through attendance at local and national meetings and reading technical literature
Participates in Microbiology/Immuno/Virology and MDX educational programs for technologists, physicians and medical residents in Infectious Disease
Participates in design and implementation of quality improvement studies
Maintains contact with technical sales and service representatives.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
MS in Clinical Microbiology, related biological or laboratory science (i.e. Microbiology, Molecular Diagnostics, Biology, Medical/Clinical Laboratory Science) required
At least three years working in a clinical or medical laboratory
Knowledge of microbiology techniques and procedures
Knowledge of quality control principles
Knowledge of research methods and statistical tools used
Knowledge of techniques for laboratory safety and infection control
Ability to evaluate new procedures from both a technical and diagnostic viewpoint (i.e., knowledge of both technical and diagnostic sensitivity and specificity)
