GENERAL SUMMARY: Reporting to the Administrative and Medical Directors of Laboratories, is responsible for the administration and technical operation of the individual departments. Plans, coordinates, and supervises the activities of personnel engaged in obtaining and preparing specimens, performance of tests, and analysis, reporting, and recording of test results. Ensures that quality control guidelines are followed, and that all clinical testing is performed in a timely, accurate, and professional manner. Coordinates section activities with other Hospital departments/units. Ensures quality and safe delivery of care to patients of all ages.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.TECHNICAL - Participates in the development of short- and long-term goals and plans for the department. Writes, reviews, and revises the Standard Operating Procedure and Technical Manuals as required. Oversees policies and protocols in the Central Processing Area for efficient workflows and turnaround times. Prepares schedules on a monthly and daily basis, including weekend, evening, and night coverage. Supervises section technologists in the performance of their routine duties. Ensures equitable distribution of work load. May perform routine technologist duties as needed. Coordinates all activities related to computer operations and applications in the sections.
2.COMMUNICATION - Initiates, develops, and recommends changes to policies; communicates approved policies to subordinates and ensures compliance. Ensures that other Hospital departments/units are fully informed of applicable laboratory policies and procedures pertinent to their areas. Trains section staff in the use or application of equipment or techniques. Conducts regular huddles and staff meetings. Attends supervisorsï¿½ meetings and communicates with the Administrative Director and other supervisors. Maintains open communication with physicians regarding abnormal tests and discusses alternative tests.
3.QC/QA - Hires, orients, develops, evaluates, and, when necessary, disciplines and discharges subordinate personnel. Monitors the quality of work performed; ensures compliance with all applicable Hospital, professional, and regulatory requirements. Provides technical guidance in the resolution of more difficult or technically demanding problems. Ensures that all equipment is clean and operational at all times, and that the work area is clean and safe.
4.DOCUMENTATION - Maintains records related to work group orientation, performance, proficiency testing, and quality of work. Documents all quality control, quality assurance, and quality improvement in the department. Maintains for trending records all issues or complaints related to the department. Documents all technical and clerical errors for trending. Compiles monthly statistics for the Lab Directors.
5.SPECIAL DUTIES - Administers the operating budget for the assigned section. Maintains updated cost containment reports. Works to maximize profitability and reduce expenses. Maintains an inventory of materials and supplies for use in the section. Initiates requisitions for additional materials as needed. Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of developments and advances in the section specialty.
OTHER JOB KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS:
1.Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related Health Science Specialty. Meets CLIA requirements for General Supervisor, Masters in Allied Health Specialty or Health Administration or Business preferred. Registered in accordance with an approved certifying agency (ASCP, NCA, AMT or equivalent).
2.3 years of progressive leadership experience in an acute care facility preferred.
