GENERAL DUTIES: To provide direction and monitoring as necessary to maintain the smooth operation of the Histology and tissue processing components of the clinical laboratory. This section includes the Histology Department, Morgue, and Surgical Tissue Laboratory. Demographic information is limited to Patient Health Information related to job function.
DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES:
ï¿½ Works accurately according to procedure manual and supervisorï¿½s instructions. ï¿½ Verifies proper specimen/test/patient identification. ï¿½ Enters orders, documents on logs/worksheets and performs result entry. ï¿½ Correctly records and processes specimens. ï¿½ Takes responsibility for completion of daily routine duties assigned to work area. ï¿½ Investigates and resolves pending and incomplete work, clerical and technical discrepancies. ï¿½ Understands and retains knowledge of department procedures. ï¿½ Assists with departmental projects and management support (ex. department supply inventory and chemical exposure monitoring) . ï¿½ Investigates computer problems and resolves or reports to appropriate personnel. ï¿½ Functions responsibly in the absence of supervisory personnel.. ï¿½ Minimizes waste of supplies and equipment. ï¿½ Is able to organize and complete several tasks simultaneously without loss of accuracy. ï¿½ Productivity remains constant under pressures associated with the job. ï¿½ Uses available time productively, contributing to department needs and/or cross-training. ï¿½ Provides back-up coverage for procedures relating to Tissue Laboratory and Autopsy Services. ï¿½ Correlates physiological and psychological differences created by age, sex, and abilities to appropriate components of client, co-worker interactions. ï¿½ Reports to work as scheduled, in accordance with hospital policy, and takes responsibility to prevent absences and tardiness. ï¿½ Demonstrates a consistently well-organized approach to all activities. ï¿½ Complies with hospital policy regarding breaks and lunch periods. ï¿½ Follows established hospital procedures for clients and/or patient requests. ï¿½ Practices appropriate safety and infection control procedures. ï¿½ Maintains clean and safe work areas. ï¿½ Reports safety hazards to appropriate personnel immediately. ï¿½ Accepts work assignment readily ï¿½ Supports all Lab and Hospital structural standards (i.e. policies, procedures and regulations) ï¿½ Provides proper identification in personal and phone communications ï¿½ Respects the patientï¿½s right to privacy by only discussing clinically relevant information in appropriate surrounding. ï¿½ Responds to difficult situations with self-control and positive attitude. ï¿½ Communicates with co-workers with clarity and respect ï¿½ Shares responsibilities and willingly offers assistance to co-workers. ï¿½ Recognizes and acknowledges the contribution of each department/specialty. Required: Has passed Histology Certification Board and has two years of histologic technique experience.
