GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Medical Director and the direct supervision of the Manager of the Respiratory Care Department, the Respiratory Therapist will initiate and administer all respiratory therapy modalities according to established policies, procedures and protocols at Metrowest Medical Center. Therapy will be administered to patients with cardiopulmonary dysfunction/disability or for preventive purposes. Participates in clinical education. Ensures quality and safe delivery of care to patients of all ages.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Administers and manages all ventilator care, continuous positive pressure breathing, weaning techniques, and artificial airway care. Set up changes and monitors associated equipment.
B. Administers therapeutic gases (oxygen and helium/oxygen), utilizing cannulas and masks. Sets up, changes, and monitors associated equipment.
C. Administers humidity and medications such as bronchodilators, antibiotics, utilizing cool and heated nebulization.
D. Performs chest physical therapy, chest percussions and vibrations, postural drainage, incentive exercises, and ambulation exercises as indicated.
E. Responds to all "Code Blue" and other emergency situations; performs and/or participates in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. May also assist with bedside surgical procedures.
2. DIAGNOSTIC TESTING:
A. Draws arterial blood from patients for analysis.
B. Performs clinical diagnostic and pulmonary function tests, such as bedside spirometry and other selected tests.
C. May assist with bedside bronchoscopies.
3. PATIENT ASSESSMENT:
A. Assesses patient respiratory status, observes patient adjustment/reaction to therapy, and evaluates the appropriateness of all therapy. Consults with attending staff concerning the most efficacious forms of therapy, and makes recommendations to enhance patient care.
4. PATIENT AND FAMILY TEACHING:
A. Provides education and instruction regarding, medication administration, energy conservation
techniques, incentive spirometry exercises, ambulation exercises, and other respiratory modalities.
5. ADMINISTRATIVE AND EDUCATION DUTIES:
A. Maintains all necessary patient and departmental records; enters clinical data regarding therapy
administered and its effect. Clinical documentation will be entered into the patient electronic medical record.
B. Assumes designated responsibilities of a charge therapist as assigned by the department manager or
clinical coordinator when required. Provides clinical and general guidance to agency, per diem, and student
personnel as needed.
C. Performs other duties as assigned by the department manager.
D. Participates in departmental quality assurance and assigned P.I. (Performance Improvement) projects
E. Participates in formal and informal education programs for respiratory therapy staff members, nurses, physicians, and other allied health professionals. Provides direct supervision for students.
F. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of development, issues, and techniques in respiratory care through attendance at meetings and educational conferences.
EDUCATION, LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION:
A. Graduate of an Accredited Respiratory Therapy program required
B. Certified by the National Board for Respiratory Care as a Certified Respiratory Therapist
(CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). It is strongly encouraged that CRT therapists advance
to RRT within 2 years of employment.
C. Maintains current licensure by the State of Massachusetts as a Respiratory Therapist.
D. Maintains current BLS, ACLS, PALS and NRP certifications once obtained. New hires are required to
obtain BLS prior to providing direct care to patients. Additional certifications as listed are required within
1 year of employment.
E. A minimum of 2 years of Respiratory Therapy experience in an acute care setting preferred.
F. Previous neonatal & pediatric experience preferred.
G. Must be able to put into practice, Service Excellence
