Processes and tests all types of laboratory specimens; reviews and reports lab results; performs operational duties, maintenance and advanced troubleshooting of laboratory instrumentation and equipment. Responsible for performing laboratory testing using approved standard operating procedures. Under the direction of the Laboratory Director and/or a designated CLS, Candidate will perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post- analytical procedures and analyses according to the California Lab Law and Regulations permitted for Medical Laboratory Technician to provide data for health maintenance, diagnoses, treatment, and monitoring of medical conditions. DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES: ï¿½ Perform and report waived and non-waived testing and moderately complex testing under supervision of California licensed personnel according to California Laboratory Law and Regulations. ï¿½ Works accurately according to procedure manual and supervisorï¿½s instructions. ï¿½ Verifies proper specimen /test/patient identification. ï¿½ Enters orders, documents on logs/worksheets and performs result entry within acceptable departmental limits. ï¿½ Correctly records and processes referral specimens. ï¿½ Analyzes clinical laboratory specimens following the standard methods and procedures approved by the Laboratory Director or designee. ï¿½ Notifies appropriate staff/clients when necessary, and documents action taken. ï¿½ Takes responsibility for completion of daily routine duties assigned to work area. ï¿½ Investigates and resolves pending and incomplete work, clerical and technical discrepancies. ï¿½ Communicates necessary information to next shift. ï¿½ Performs and records quality control, takes and documents appropriate action. ï¿½ Maintains neat, organized records and work station. ï¿½ Successfully completes training within an acceptable time frame . ï¿½ Understands and retains knowledge of department procedures. ï¿½ Teaches and/or trains new employees according to department guidelines. ï¿½ Troubleshoots problems with procedures, QC, and instruments. ï¿½ Participates in proficiency testing program as required by laboratory CLIA regulations. ï¿½ Correlates physiological and psychological differences created by age, sex, and abilities to appropriate components of laboratory testing. ï¿½ Attends or participates in professionally related education programs to fulfill education requirement for licensure. ï¿½ Assists with departmental projects and management support. ï¿½ Recognizes abnormal results and/or questionable patient information; follows department protocol for resolution. ï¿½ Evaluates specimen adequacy/integrity according to departmental guidelines and optimal patient welfare. ï¿½ Investigates computer problems and resolves or reports to appropriate personnel. ï¿½ Initiates charge reconciliation. ï¿½ Associateï¿½s degree (or equivalent experience); graduate of accredited school of medical laboratory technicians or equivalent, meeting required criteria as defined by CLIA regulations for High Complexity testing (42 CFR 493.1489, Jan, 24, 2003). ï¿½ State of California licensure as Medical Technician current at all times ï¿½ 0 ï¿½ 2 yearsï¿½ experience as a medical technician. ï¿½ Proficiency in laboratory procedures. ï¿½ Computer experience preferred. ï¿½ Communication and organizational skills. ï¿½ Ability to perform accurately and consistently under high stress. ï¿½ Excellent physical stamina, which includes the ability to walk or stand from 6 to 10 hours a day, do repetitive bending/reaching, climbing of stairs, and sitting. ï¿½ Ability to carry 10 pounds constantly and to lift up to 25 pounds on occasion. ï¿½ Ability to do constant repetitive motion, using hands, fingers, wrists to perform testing, and other related functions. ï¿½ Ability to work at computer terminals for varying periods of the day which can range from one to three minutes or as long as several hours. ï¿½ Emotional stamina to handle the unexpected and stressful situations that may arise while working with sick or injured patients. ï¿½ Must be able to see well enough to read labels, reports and computer screens. ï¿½ Ability to perform all work duties and/or move around in areas of restricted space. ï¿½ Ability to evaluate each situation and handle it with the utmost professionalism, dedication, and concern for the health and welfare of others.
