ResponsibilitiesUnder the supervision of the Division Chief of Arthroplasty, the Physician Assistant (PA) coordinates the care of patients of the UCLA Joint Services including hip and knee procedures. These procedures include total joint arthroplasty, revision arthroplasty, ORIF, knee arthroscopy, and more. The PA provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for patients with permanent and progressive damage to knees, hips, or shoulders as a result of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, trauma, or other joint disorders. The PA will assist the Orthopaedic surgeons with patient care and related follow up, coordinating with patient's primary care and/or specialty physicians as needed. The PA will provide patient/family/caretaker education for both outpatient clinical, inpatient services, and will serve as the first assist in the OR as needed or as directed by the Division Chief. The PA will facilitate the transition from inpatient to outpatient care. Major functions include assisting physicians. The PA will facilitate collaborations with interdisciplinary team members and other Orthopaedic Surgery Department faculty and staff, as well as participate in clinic research projects. Perform initial consultation and follow up visits in the Joint Replacement and Reconstructive surgery. Provide initial work-up to include imaging, non-operative treatment, injections, counseling and subsequent surgical referral. Order and evaluate laboratory and radiology studies. Order physical therapy as needed. Manage non-surgical joint problems and perform therapeutic procedures independently within the scope of practice. Evaluate fragility fracture patients seeking follow up, refer to DEXA scan and Osteoporosis Center as indicated. Assist Orthopaedic surgeons with procedures in clinic. Specified Procedures Requiring Supervising Physician's Orders Life Threatening Situations Serve as 1st Assistant in the OR as needed or Directed by the Division Chief. Act as point of contact for patients calling with non-urgent issues during normal working hours. Triage and provide advice regarding concerns such as swelling, post operative instructions, logistics, and similar non-urgent matters. Document medical information in medical record and/or electronic medical record. Independently run any Ortho Clinic as needed. Provide education to patients and their family members or caretakers for outpatient clinical and inpatient services, including transition from inpatient to outpatient care. QualificationsCurrent certification as a Physician Assistant licensed in the State of California
Demonstrated skills in providing care to patients with medical and Orthopaedic needs related to joint replacement and arthritis
A minimum of five years' experience treating patients with Orthopaedic problems.
Demonstrated skill in taking patient history, performing patient assessment, and developing a plan of care based on sound medical judgment.
Ability to perform non-operative Orthopaedic procedures, including injections.
Ability to provide education concerning care and treatment of Orthopaedic conditions to patients/families/caretakers.
Ability to work effectively with orthopaedic surgeons and other health team members to meet comprehensive needs of patients.
Ability to practice independently and to communicate closely and knowledgeably with physicians and staff.
Current ACLS certification.
