CACI is seeking an Infection Preventionist to oversee and develop data management systems, including computer programs to monitor data quality; communicates with project areas regarding study activities and protocols; analyzes data for reports, presentations and publications; assists in the review of study data for data quality; organizes study files, including data and correspondence files; performs scientific, medical and research literature searches in fields including but not limited to Behavioral and Social Sciences, Epidemiology, and Laboratory and prepares slides for scientific presentations; provides analytic support to multi-disciplinary teams in order to accomplish public health research and program goals.
I. Introduction and Purpose
The mission of the organization is on file in the Human Resources Management Office. The primary purpose of this position is to provide clinically-related consultation and technical assistance regarding surveillance for healthcare-associated infections (HAI) using the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). In addition, the incumbent serves as a subject matter expert for clinical inquiries related to application of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) HAI definitions and criteria
A. In response to telephone and written inquiries, provides NHSN user support regarding procedures for correctly applying CDC HAI definitions and criteria and data entry. Identifies user/system issues requiring system modifications and prioritizes, escalates and contributes to response. (25 percent of time.)
B. Prepares and presents educational trainings about NHSN to professional organizations and governmental bodies at national, state and local levels. (25 percent of time.)
C. Assists/leads the development of new NHSN modules, providing subject matter expertise related to HAI surveillance. (25 percent of time.)
D. Identifies and creates necessary NHSN module/manual updates resulting from technological advancements, infection/disease trends, changing or broadening IP/nursing responsibilities or yearly updates of system components (International Classification of Diseases 9th Revision Clinical Modifications [ICD-9-CM]). (8 percent of time.)
E. Works with Branch and other DHQP and appropriate CDC staff to provide the infection preventionist (IP)/nursing perspective related to HAI policy and guideline development. Writes/reviews new training/educational documents, including the NHSN Newsletter. Ensures consistency of training documents with CDC, Association for Practitioners in Infection Control (APIC), and other related organizations/governmental bodies. (6 percent of time.)
F. Provides consultation and technical assistance to national infection prevention/nursing organizations in order to support their HAI prevention/control activities and to promote DHQP policies and initiatives. (3 percent of time.)
G. Leads/assists in NHSN data cleaning projects to improve the quality of NHSN product. (2 percent of time.)
H. When requested, participates in temporary details as part of epidemiological investigation, research and other technical assistance teams. (2 percent of time.)
I. Reviews current published literature on HAI IP/nursing-related issues and notifies appropriate staff when new significant developments or issues appear. Prepares articles/abstracts or critiques on articles on HAI prevention/control and surveillance in medical, nursing and infection prevention and control journals, public health journals, MMWR, newsletters of national IP/nursing organizations, and other publications. (2 percent of time.)
J. Participates, as requested, in special DHQP studies or projects. (2 percent of time.)
K. Performs other duties as assigned.
Factor I - Knowledge Required by the Position Current knowledge of infectious disease transmission and infection prevention and control issues, surveillance methodology and nursing issues and policies are essential to this position. Professional knowledge of a wide range of IP/nursing concepts, principles, and practices to serve as a consultant to health departments, hospitals, nursing homes, healthcare units within correctional facilities, and other health care providers in the development of IP/nursing policy, procedures, and education interventions related to HAI surveillance, prevention, and control. Knowledge of day-to day operations of a healthcare facility infection prevention program and collaborations with nursing and medical staff necessary for success. Technical assistance and promotional skills related to working with clinicians, IPs, nurses and other health care providers in the implementation of DHQP policies, guidelines and initiatives. Thorough knowledge of CDC's NHSN to provide user support for HAI surveillance and educational offerings.
Factor 2 - Supervisory Controls Incumbent receives broad direction from the Chief, Surveillance Branch, in terms of overall policy and objectives within this framework. More direct, specific direction is provided by the Team Lead. Incumbent is responsible for actively developing and implementing projects and activities to achieve objectives while keeping supervisors informed of ongoing activities and potential or real problems. Work is reviewed in terms of effectiveness in accomplishing objectives and carrying out responsibilities.
Factor 3 - Guidelines Incumbent uses agency regulations, polices, guidelines, rules, established CDC, DHQP and national infection prevention and control recommendations, journals and state-of-the-art developments. The employee uses initiative, resourcefulness and good judgment in researching trends and patterns to provide appropriate consultation and technical assistance to meet the unique needs of a variety of health care providers in implementing the recommendations for preventing and controlling HAI and fulfilling surveillance and reporting requirements.
